Light up the longest night of the year with these easy, glowing lantern jars! Made with recycled materials, this cozy craft helps kids celebrate the beauty of light, warmth, and togetherness during the Winter Solstice.
What You’ll Need
- Clean glass jars (mason jars or baby food jars work great)
- Tissue paper in warm or cool colors
- Mod Podge or watered-down glue
- Paintbrush
- Battery-powered tea lights or LED candles
- Twine or ribbon (optional, for hanging or decoration)
How to Make It
- Prepare your jars: Wash and dry each jar thoroughly. Remove any labels or stickers.
- Add color: Tear tissue paper into small pieces. Brush Mod Podge onto the jar, then press the tissue on. Overlap colors for a glowing, stained-glass effect.
- Seal and dry: Brush another layer of Mod Podge on top. Let it dry for at least 30 minutes.
- Light it up: Place an LED candle inside and watch your lantern glow! Add twine or ribbon around the rim for a festive touch.
Talk About the Meaning of Light
As you create, discuss why light matters — how it guides us, warms us, and helps things grow. Share how families across the world use candles and lanterns to mark the Winter Solstice and welcome the sun’s return.
Bonus Idea: Lantern Parade!
Turn your craft into an experience! Dim the lights, play soft music, and have a “lantern walk” around the house or yard. It’s a magical way to celebrate the season of light together.
